Athletic Club has a new coach for the 2005-06 season. José Luis Mendilibar is in charge of coaching the Club’s First Division team convinced that he will be able to do a great job.

To start with, Athletic Club took part for the first time in the Intertoto competition. Our rival was the Rumanian club of Cluj. Winning the penalty shoot-out is like winning the lottery and once again our luck ran out and the Red-Whites lost the shoot-out and were eliminated from the competition. The League started with a convincing victory against Real, but the results achieved from that point on were unexpected and disappointing. After ten League match days, Mendilibar is replaced by Javier Clemente, who will be coaching the premier team for the third time, with the aim of getting the team back on the right track in the League so that they can start the climb back up the league ladder as soon as possible.
